Example of traditional beauty product packaging

Beauty products reflect the brand’s identity, from the unboxing experience to the product itself, making packaging a crucial element.  The marketing teams' research showed customers had negative reactions to molded plastic packaging, and did not understand or trust bio-based resins.  The alternative solution, a die-cut and folded insert, was complicated to assemble and exposed unappealing structural components visible to the end user. We were tasked with developing a competitive alternative, maintaining the current presentation and structural testing standards while improving the visual appeal through molded fiber.

The Solution

A more visually appealing concept was developed and prototyped to prove the feasibility of our material and technology. Through an iterative series of in-house prototypes, a preferred design was approved for pre-production testing. The insert itself has structural features to absorb impact in drop testing, press-fit buttons to secure the products in transit, and lowered feet to keep products level inside the box. This concept opened our customers’ eyes to the potential of molded fiber and unlocked countless possibilities for beautifully functional, custom inserts.

Value Added

  • Product retention in drop testing

  • Improved visual appeal

  • Product sits proud of the molded fiber insert surface for a clean presentation

  • Designed for an automated packing system

  • Competitive price point to alternative
